Bible

Pigeon Pigeons are mentioned as among the offerings which, by divine appointment, Abram presented unto the Lord (Gen. 15:9). They were afterwards enumerated among the sin-offerings (Lev. 1:14; 12:6), and the law provided that those who could not offer a lamb might offer two young pigeons (5:7; comp. Luke 2:24). (See DOVE.). Source: Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary.

Dream Interpretation

To dream of seeing pigeons and hearing them cooing above their cotes, denotes domestic peace and pleasure-giving children. For a young woman, this dream indicates an early and comfortable union.
To see them being used in a shooting match, and, if you participate, it denotes that cruelty in your nature will show in your dealings, and you are warned of low and debasing pleasures.
To see them flying, denotes freedom from misunderstanding, and perhaps news from the absent. Source: Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted ....

Literature

Pigeon (To). To cheat, to gull one of his money by almost self-evident hoaxes. Pigeons are very easily gulled, caught by snares, or scared by malkins. One easily gulled is called a pigeon. The French pigeon means a dupe.
"Je me deffleroy tantost que tu serois un de ceux qui ne se laissent si facilement pigeonner a tellesgens - Les Dialogues de Jacques Tahureau, (1585).
Flying the pigeons. Stealing coals from a cart or sack between the coal-dealer's yard and the house of the customer.
Flying the blue pigeon. Stealing the lead from off the roofs of churches or buildings of any kind.
To pigeon a person is to cheat him clandestinely. A gullible person is called a pigeon, and in the sporting world sharps and flats are called "rooks and pigeons." The brigands of Spain used to be called palomos (pigeons); and in French argot a dupe is called pechon, or peschon de ruby; where pechon or peschon is the Italian piccione (a pigeon), and de ruby is a pun on dérobé, bamboozled.
To pluck a pigeon. To cheat a gullible person of his money. To fleece a green-horn. (See Greenhorn.)
" `Here comes a nice pigeon to pluck,' said one of the thieves."- C. Reade. Source: Brewer's Dictionary.

Slang in 1811

Pigeons and Doves

Peaceful Dove.
Scientific classification
Kingdom:Animalia
Phylum:Chordata
Class:Aves
Order:Columbiformes
Family:Columbidae
Genera
 Many: see text.
The doves are the 308 species of near passerine birds in the order Columbiformes. The terms dove and pigeon are used interchangeably, although smaller species are more likely to be called doves.

The species commonly referred to just as the "pigeon" is the feral Rock Dove.

Pigeons and doves are stout-bodied birds with short necks and short slender bills with a fleshy cere.

The poorly constructed nests are made of sticks, and the two white eggs are incubated by both sexes.

Doves feed on seeds, fruit and other soft plantstuffs. Unlike most other birds, (but see flamingo), the doves and pigeons produce ?milk?, which is secreted by a sloughing of fluid-filled cells from the lining of the crop. Both sexes produce this highly nutritious substance to feed to the young.

This family occurs worldwide, but the greatest variety is in the Indomalaya and Australasia ecozones. It is related to the extinct dodos

Symbolism

White doves are a traditional symbol of love and peace. A dove was supposed to have been released by Noah after the flood in order to find land; it came back carrying an olive branch, telling Noah that, somewhere, there was land. A dove with an olive branch, then, has come to symbolize peace.

In politics the name "dove" is sometimes applied to figures who favour peaceful solutions to problems as opposed to "hawks" who favour aggressive action.
