Etymology: Pennyroyal \Pen`ny*roy"al\, noun. [A corruption of Old English puliall royal. Old English puliall is ultimately derived from Latin puleium, or pulegium regium (so called as being good against fleas), from pulex flea; and royal is translation of Latin regium, in puleium regium.]. Literature | Pennyroyal Flea-bane, the odour being, as it is supposed, hateful to fleas This is a real curiosity of blundering derivation. The Latin word is pulecium, the flea destroyer, from pulex, a flea, softened into pulegium, and corrupted into the English-Latin pule'-regium. "Pule," changed first into puny, then into penny, gives us "penny-regium," whence "penny-royal." The French call the herb pouliot, from pou (a louse or flea). Source: Brewer's Dictionary. |

The oil is also used as a flea repellant for pets. This latter usage is the origin of the plant's Latin species name, the flea being Pulex irritans.
