Rising precipitously from the surrounding waters, the island's highest point is nearly a mile (1.6 km) above sea level. As wind-driven clouds encounter this obstacle, they flow around it to form these large, spinning eddies.Credit: NASA. | ![]() | Magnetic anomaly map produced on SURVEYOR Magnetic striping is readily apparent in this map of offshore California Earlier magnetic work led directly to Theory of Seafloor Spreading This map helped unravel the tectonic history of the Eastern Pacific Ocean Data acquired by towed proton precession magnetometer.Credit: Coast & Geodetic Survey Historical Image Collection. |
