NODDYNoun1. An inverted pendulum consisting of a short vertical flat spring which supports a rod having a bob at the top; -- used for detecting and measuring slight horizontal vibrations of a body to which it is attached. 2. A small two-wheeled one-horse vehicle. 3. An old game at cards. 4. The arctic fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis). Sometimes also applied to other sea birds. 5. Any tern of the genus Anous, as A. stolidus. 6. A simpleton; a fool. |

Computing | Noddy /nod'ee/ adj. [UK: from the children's books] 1. Small and un-useful, but demonstrating a point. Noddy programs are often written by people learning a new language or system. The archetypal noddy program is hello world. Noddy code may be used to demonstrate a feature or bug of a compiler. May be used of real hardware or software to imply that it isn't worth using. "This editor's a bit noddy." 2. A program that is more or less instant to produce. In this use, the term does not necessarily connote uselessness, but describes a hack sufficiently trivial that it can be written and debugged while carrying on (and during the space of) a normal conversation. Literature | Noddy A Tom Noddy is a very foolish or half-witted person, "a noodle." The marine birds called Noddies are so silly that anyone can go up to them and knock them down with a stick. A donkey is called a Neddy Noddy. Minshew has a capital guess derivation, well fitted for a Dictionary of Fable. He says, "Noddy, a fool, so called because he nods his head when he ought to speak." Noddy is a fictional character created by British children's author Enid Blyton.
One of the most enduring and best-loved of children's characters, Noddy is a little wooden doll who lives in Toyland. His best friend is Big-Ears - a gnome. Noddy lives next to a family of teddy bears, and owns a self-aware car. Noddy originally appeared in a series of illustrated books, but later became popular with a new generation of children as a result of an animated television adaptation.
Written at a time of segregation, the original Noddy stories feature "Gollywogs" - black-faced woollen dolls who are responsible for much of the crime and evil in Toyland. These dolls were popular in the UK at the time the stories were written, but have fallen out of use because of the better awareness of race relations.
Recently, in the TV series and a new series of books, Noddy has become up-to-date, with Gollywogs featuring more as friendly neighbours.
