Montague is a city located in Siskiyou County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,456.

Geography


Montague is located at 41°43'38" North, 122°31'35" West (41.727168, -122.526468)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.6 km² (1.8 mi²). 4.6 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 1,456 people, 560 households, and 390 families residing in the city. The population density is 314.1/km² (815.3/mi²). There are 609 housing units at an average density of 131.4/km² (341.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 89.01% White, 0.07% African American, 5.08% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 2.20% from other races, and 3.43% from two or more races. 5.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 560 households out of which 36.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% are married couples living together, 14.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% are non-families. 25.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.07. In the city the population is spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.5 males. The median income for a household in the city is $22,991, and the median income for a family is $28,672. Males have a median income of $30,455 versus $22,250 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,661. 24.2% of the population and 19.6% of families are below the poverty line. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.90.
