Literature | Mahdi (The). The supreme pontiff of the Shiites (2 syl.) Only twelve of these imaums have really appeared- viz. Ali, Hassan, Hosein, and the nine lineal descendants of Hosein. Mohammed, the last Mahdi, we are told, is not really dead, but sleeps in a cavern near Bagdad, and will return to life in the fulness of time to overthrow Dejal (anti-Christ). The Mahdi which has of late been disturbing Egypt is hated by the Persians, who are Sunnites (2 syl.); but even the Turks and Persians are looking out for a Mahdi who will stamp out the "infldels." They are two different persons, who will both appear in the Last Days. al-Mahdi will precede the second coming of the Messiah Isa son of Mary. The Messiah Isa (Jesus) will be able to slay ad-Dajjal (the false Messiah); al-Mahdi will not be capable of this.
al-Mahdi is a title meaning "the guided one". He will come from Makkah (Mecca) and rule from Damascus.

According to other reported sayings by the Prophet Muhammad some of the features of al-Mahdi are:
The title has been claimed by various individuals in history, including Muhammad Ahmad who founded a short-lived empire in Sudan in the late 19th century.
