Nicknames: Father of the Constitution James Madison (March 16, 1751 - June 28, 1836) was the fourth (1809-1817) President of the United States. He was co-author, with John Jay and Alexander Hamilton, of the Federalist Papers, and is viewed by some as the "Father of the United States Constitution."
Biography
Madison was born in King George County, Virginia. His parents Colonel James Madison, Sr (March 27, 1723 - February 27, 1801) and Eleanor Rose "Nellie" Conway (January 9, 1731 - February 11, 1829) were the prosperous owners of the tobacco plantation in Orange County, Virginia where James spent most of his childhood years. In 1769, James left the plantation to attended Princeton University (it was called the College of New Jersey at the time), finishing its four-year course in two years, but exhausting himself from overwork in the process. When he regained his health, he became a protegé of Thomas Jefferson. In this capacity he became a prominent figure in Virginia state politics, helping to draft their declaration of religious freedom and persuading Virginia to give their northwestern territories (consisting of most of modern-day Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee) to the continental congress.
In the 1780s, Madison helped convince the political leaders of the time to call for a constitutional convention. Madison's influence at the convention in 1787 has led some historians to call him the "Father of the Constitution". His notes on the convention became the basis for his contributions to the Federalist Papers, which are considered the definitive contemporary commentary on the Constitution of the USA. Madison's arguments were powerfully influenced by the political thought of Charles de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu.
When the constitution was ratified, Madison became a U.S. Representative from his home state of Virginia. It was he who proposed the first 10 amendments to the Constitution, known collectively as the Bill of Rights, based on earlier work by George Mason. The chief characteristic of Madison's time in Congress was his desire to limit the power of the federal government. It was when he and the other followers of Thomas Jefferson denied the power of the federal government to form its own bank that the first political parties in the United States were formed: the Federalists, who followed Hamilton and believed in a strong central government, and the Democratic-Republicans, who followed Jefferson and believed strongly in limiting centralized power.
At 5'4" and 100 pounds, Madison was frequently ill and highly religious. In 1794, Madison married his wife Dolley (Dolley Madison), who cut as attractive and vivacious figure as he a sickly and antisocial one. It was Dolley who is largely credited with inventing the role of "First Lady" as political ally to the president.
In 1797 Madison left Congress; in 1801 he became Jefferson's Secretary of State. In 1808, he ran for president in his own right, and won, largely on the strength of his abilities in foreign affairs at a time when England and France were both on the edge of war with the United States. Both countries were blockading the ports of the other, preventing American commerce with either. In the end, England's efforts to destroy American maritime commerce put them over the top. In 1810, a bill was passed that would break off relations with any nation that would not remove the blockade: France did, and England didn't.
The war was not a wonderful success; the British won victory after victory, including a temporary occupation of Washington, D.C., when Madison was driven out. The British also armed American Indians in the west, including the Shawnee under their leader Tecumseh. Neither side was terribly enthusiastic about the war, however: the British had nothing to gain, and in the United States, New England threatened secession if the war was not ended. In 1814, the Treaty of Ghent ended the war. The most important battle, the Battle of New Orleans (1815), in which Andrew Jackson distinguished himself, was fought several months after the end of the war, the news not having reached the Louisiana territory in time. The major lasting effect for the political face of the country was the end of the Federalist party, who were considered traitors when they opposed the war.
After leaving office, Madison retired to Montpelier, his farm in Virginia. He was briefly the rector of the University of Virginia, but spent most of his days farming. He died on June 28, 1836.

The Madison is an event in track cycling, named after the Madison Square Garden in New York, and known as the "American race" in French (l'Américaine). The race format is a variation of the points race. Teams of two or three compete, but only one rider needs to be racing at any stage. Periodically, the teams change riders by "tagging" their teammates, usually giving them a push to transfer as much momentum to the racing rider.

Wisconsin State Capitol, Madison, WisconsinMadison is the capital of Wisconsin, a state of the United States of America. As of the 2000 census, it has a population of 208,054. It is the county seat of Dane County.
The University of Wisconsin's main campus is located in the city. The main downtown thoroughfare is State Street, which links the University campus with the State Capitol square, and is lined with restaurants and shops. Only pedestrians, buses, and bikes are allowed on State Street. The Capitol Square is situated between lakes Mendota and Monona.
Notable buildings include the Wisconsin state capitol, and the Monona Terrace meeting and convention center, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright, who spent a brief time as a student at the University, also designed other buildings in Madison, such as the Unitarian meeting house. In the summer time, on Saturday mornings, the Dane County Farmers' Market is on the Capitol Square.
Madison has three identities—state capital, college town, and working-class city—which blend and synergize. Madison will always be associated with the name of "Fighting Bob" LaFollette and the Progressive movement. La Follette's magazine, The Progressive, founded in 1909, is still published in Madison today.
In 1996 Money magazine identified Madison as the best place to live in the United States.

Plaque on Bascom HallThe University of Wisconsin - Madison was founded in 1848 and is the largest university in the state of Wisconsin. It has undergraduate and graduate divisions, and professional schools in law, medicine, veterinary medicine, and pharmacy. The total Fall 2002 enrollment is 41,552, of whom 28,778 are undergraduates.
The university is located in Madison, Wisconsin just blocks from the state capitol building, on an isthmus between two lakes, Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. In 1971, it was merged with the Wisconsin State University system to create the University of Wisconsin System.
University of Wisconsin, Madison, is the full official name. It is also called UW, UW-Madison, or Wisconsin for short.
The school's sports teams are called the Wisconsin Badgers. They participate in the NCAA's Division I-A and in the Big Ten Conference; its hockey program competes in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
Among U. S. universities, the University of Wisconsin, Madison is frequently listed as one of the "public Ivies"—publicly funded universities providing a quality of education comparable to the best private schools. It is often ranked among the top ten public universities in the United States.

Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF)
The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation is a significant source of research support, independent of government grants. It currently contributes about $30 million per year, giving the university's research programs a "margin of excellence."WARF was founded in 1925 by Harry Steenbock, who invented process for using ultraviolet radiation to add vitamin D to milk and other foods. Rather than leaving the invention unpatented—then the standard practice for university inventions—he patented it, worked with Quaker Oats and pharmaceutical companies to commercialize it, and used the proceeds to fund research.
Warfarin (coumarin) is named for WARF, and the story of its discovery is emblematic of the "Wisconsin idea" and the relationship of the university to the Wisconsin public. In 1933 a farmer from Deer Park showed up unannounced at the School of Agriculture and walked into a professor's laboratory with a milk can full of blood which would not coagulate. In his truck, he had also brought a dead heifer and some spoiled clover hay. He wanted to know what had killed his cow. In 1941, Karl Paul Link successfully isolated the anticoagulant factor, which found commercial application as a rodenticide and is used in medicine for treating circulatory conditions.

The 1970 Sterling Hall bombing
In the years 1966 through 1970, the University of Wisconsin was shaken by a series of student protests, and by the use of force by authorities in response. The first major demonstrations protested the presence on campus of recruiters for the Dow Chemical Company, which supplied the napalm used in Vietnam. Another target of protest was the Army Mathematics Research Center (AMRC), clearly identified and centrally located in the Sterling Hall physics building. Founded in 1957 and funded by the military, its precise role in the war was disputed. director J. Barkley Rosser, an eminent logician, publicly minimized any practical role and implied that AMRC pursued only pure mathematics. But the student newspaper, The Daily Cardinal, obtained quarterly reports that AMRC submitted to the Army. The Cardinal published a series of investigative articles making a convincing case that AMRC was pursuing research that was directly pursuant to specific DOD requests, and relevant to counterinsurgency operations in Vietnam. AMRC became a magnet for demonstrations, in which protesters chanted "U.S. out of Vietnam! Smash Army math!" In 1970, Karleton Armstrong and three other men stole a van from computer science professor Larry Travis, filled it with ammonium nitrate and fuel oil mixture, parked it next to Sterling Hall, and exploded it, killing physics graduate student Robert Fassnacht. At that time, it was described as "the single most destructive act of sabotage in United States history."

Three United States Navy ships have been named Madison, the first two in honor of James Madison, fourth President of the United States, and the third after Commander James Jonas Madison, who won the Medal of Honor in World War I.
- The first Madison was a 14-gun schooner launched in 1812 on Lake Ontario and used in the War of 1812.
- The second Madison was Van Buren-class schooner, designed by Edward Preble and built in 1832 for United States Revenue Service. She was 73 ft long with a 22 ft beam, displaced 112 tons, and mounted one 20-pounder gun. As part of the mosquito fleet, Madison served against the Seminole Indians in Florida in 1841 and 1842, then was returned to the Treasury Department and later (1850) to the United States Coastal Survey.
- The third Madison (DD-425) was a destroyer in World War II.
