A. A rock defined on the basis of certain selected physical characters b. This term was proposed by C.A. Seyler in 1954 in a communication to the Nomenclature Subcommittee of the International Committee for Coal Petrology to designate the different macroscopically recognizable bands of humic coals. These bands were described by M.C. Stopes in 1919 as the four visible ingredients in banded bituminous coal. The following macroscopic bands are distinguished in humic coals: vitrain, clarain, durain, andfusain. (references)
