Lisbon (in Portuguese, Lisboa) is the capital city of Portugal.

Geography

Lisbon is located in the west of the country, on the Atlantic coast, where the Tagus river (Portuguese Tejo), flows in the ocean. The city occupies an area of 84.6 km2. The city comprises 53 freguesias.

Demographics

The population of the city is 564,657, according to the 2001 census. The population density is 6,606.9 inhabitants per km2.

Highlights

The heart of the city is the Baixa or lower town, location of the São Jorge Castle and the Santa Maria Maior Cathedral. The oldest district of the city is Alfama, close to the Tejo.

History

Lisbon has been the capital of Portugal since 1260 and reached its peak of prosperity during the period of the Portuguese Empire in the 16th century.

On January 26, 1531, the city was hit by an earthquake which killed thousands.

On November 1, 1755, Lisbon was destroyed by another earthquake, the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, which killed 90,000 and destroyed eighty-five percent of the city. [1] Voltaire mentioned it in his 1759 novel Candide, and Oliver Wendell Holmes (the elder) mentioned it in his 1857 poem, The Deacon's Masterpiece, or The Wonderful One-Hoss Shay.

Lisbon is a village located in Columbiana County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 2,788. It is the county seat of Columbiana County6.

Geography


Lisbon is located at 40°46'26" North, 80°46'3" West (40.773874, -80.767553)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.9 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.9 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 2,788 people, 1,133 households, and 696 families residing in the village. The population density is 969.8/km² (2,521.1/mi²). There are 1,253 housing units at an average density of 435.8/km² (1,133.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.74% White, 0.90% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 0.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,133 households out of which 30.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.5% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.5% are non-families. 34.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 3.07. In the village the population is spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.0 males. The median income for a household in the village is $27,841, and the median income for a family is $36,707. Males have a median income of $29,271 versus $19,826 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,097. 14.1% of the population and 10.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.4% are under the age of 18 and 5.2% are 65 or older.

Lisbon is a town located in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 9,359.

Geography


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 76.6 km² (29.6 mi²). 76.5 km² (29.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.10% water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 9,359 people, 3,218 households, and 2,738 families residing in the town. The population density is 122.3/km² (316.8/mi²). There are 3,271 housing units at an average density of 42.8/km² (110.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.62% White, 0.21% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.04% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,218 households out of which 40.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 78.9% are married couples living together, 3.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 14.9% are non-families. 12.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.90 and the average family size is 3.17. In the town the population is spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 26.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 99.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.5 males. The median income for a household in the town is $69,012, and the median income for a family is $75,202. Males have a median income of $51,839 versus $32,362 for females. The per capita income for the town is $26,550. 2.6% of the population and 0.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 3.2% are under the age of 18 and 9.6% are 65 or older.
