Latimer is a city located in Franklin County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 535.

Geography


Latimer is located at 42°45'46" North, 93°22'8" West (42.762896, -93.368873)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.1 km² (2.3 mi²). 6.1 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 535 people, 210 households, and 144 families residing in the city. The population density is 88.3/km² (228.9/mi²). There are 225 housing units at an average density of 37.1/km² (96.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 87.29% White, 0.00% African American, 2.06% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 9.35% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. 17.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 210 households out of which 29.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.0% are married couples living together, 5.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 31.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 22.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.15. In the city the population is spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 21.5% from 25 to 44, 17.0% from 45 to 64, and 28.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 88.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.6 males. The median income for a household in the city is $29,028, and the median income for a family is $35,833. Males have a median income of $30,313 versus $21,042 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,332. 6.6% of the population and 2.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 0.0% are under the age of 18 and 8.7% are 65 or older.

As of the census of 2000, there are 4,288 people, 1,468 households, and 1,174 families residing in the town. The population density is 102.1/km² (264.5/mi²). There are 1,538 housing units at an average density of 36.6/km² (94.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.47% White, 2.12% African American, 0.61% Native American, 1.52% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 1.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,468 households out of which 41.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.2% are married couples living together, 9.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.0% are non-families. 15.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.92 and the average family size is 3.23. In the town the population is spread out with 28.9% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 33.5% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 103.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.9 males. The median income for a household in the town is $43,146, and the median income for a family is $47,215. Males have a median income of $29,492 versus $22,164 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,551. 8.1% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line.
