LARMOR RADIUS

Specialty Definition: LARMOR RADIUS

DomainDefinition

Physics

The radius of the path of a charged particle moving in a magnetic field (and transverse to the field lines). Also known as gyroradius and cyclotron radius. The Larmor radius can be readily determined by balancing the centripetal Lorentz (F = q/c v-cross-B) force with the equation for circular motion (F = mv^2/r) to get r = (c m / q) v_perp/B.
