Physics | The simplest form of the Rayleigh-Taylor or Interchange Instability occurs when a high-density fluid is placed on top of a low density fluid in a gravitational field. Any fluctuation at the fluid interface allows gravity to pull the high density fluid downwards so that the low-density fluid ends up on top, and the two fluids interchange places. More generally, an interchange instability occurs when two types of fluid are situated with an external force such that the "heavy fluid" pushes against the "light fluid", and the potential energy is not a minimum. These instabilities are common in inertial confinement fusion plasmas. In plasmas with magnetic fields, both the plasma and the field have pressure and therefore the plasma may interchange position with the magnetic field. A prime example is the flute instability in mirror machines. (See MHD, instability, flute, mirror.). (references) |
