Specialty Definition: Gustav Hugo

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Gustav von Hugo (November 23, 1764 - September 15, 1844), German jurist, was born at Lörrach in Baden.

From the gymnasium at Karlsruhe he passed in 1782 to the university of Göttingen, where he studied law for three years. Having received the appointment of tutor to the prince of Anhalt-Dessau, he took his doctor's degree at the university of Halle in 1788. Recalled in this year to Göttingen as extraordinary professor of law, he became ordinary professor in 1792. In the preface to his Beytrage zur civilistischen Bucherkenntniss der letzten vierzig Jahre (1828-1829) he gives a sketch of the condition of the civil law teaching at Göttingen. at that time.

The Roman Canon and German elements of the existing law were, without criticism or differentiation, welded into an ostensible whole for practical needs, with the result that it was difficult to say whether historical truth or practical ends were most prejudiced. One man handed on the inert mass to the next in the same condition. as he had received it, new errors crept in, and even the best of teachers could not escape from the false method which had become traditional. These were the evils which Hugo set himself to combat, and he became the founder of that historical school of jurisprudence which was continued and further developed by Savigny. His magna opera are the Lehrbuch eines civilistischen Cursus (7 vols., 1792-1821), in which his method is thoroughly worked out, and the Zivilistiscizes Magazin (6 vols., 1790-1837).

For an account of his life see Eyssenhardt, Zur Erinnerung an Gustav Hugo (Berlin, 1845).

Hugo Award

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

The Hugo Award is given every year for the best science fiction or fantasy stories of the previous year, and for related areas such as best science fiction art, best film, and best related book. The award categories have changed over time, as the field of science fiction has grown and changed. The winners are voted on by science fiction fans, and the awards are handed out at the annual World Science Fiction Convention.

The award is named after Hugo Gernsback, the founder of the pioneering science fiction magazine Amazing Stories.

The Hugo Award itself was co-designed by longtime SF fan and booster Benedict Jablonski who based the trophy on a rocket-shaped hood ornament from an Oldsmobile 88.

The first World Science Fiction Convention was held in New York in 1939. While "bests" had been voted upon at all conventions there were no awards until the 11th Worldcon (Philadelphia, 1953) and this was, at the time, considered a one-time event. However for the 13th Convention (Cleveland, 1955) it was decided to make the physical awards a permanent feature.

The 11th convention awards were the idea of Hal Lynch. The awards were hand-machined by Jack McKnight and consisted of a finned steel rocket on a circular wooden base. At the 13th Convention a new design, capable of "mass" production, was made by Ben Jason, it was largely similar to the first design but on a square base. It became the standard design for most of the following conventions.

At first the award was known as the "Annual Science Fiction Achievement Award", with "Hugo Award" being an unofficial name, but certainly the more well known. Since 1993, the nickname has been adopted as the official name of the award.

There are other awards, with different award conditions. The Hugo Award is awarded by fans. In contrast, the Nebula award is awarded by fellow writers (voting as a group). The World Science Fiction Convention also awards the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel is also presented at the Worldcon, but is not a Hugo.

While the WSFS rules state that the award is for works of science fiction and fantasy, in practice it has almost always gone to science fiction works. There were complaints when the 2001 Hugo for best novel was given to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, a fantasy novel aimed at young adults.

Hurricane Hugo

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Hugo (September 13-September 22, 1989) was a hurricane that originated in Africa and made landfall on the evening of the 21st just northeast of Charleston, South Carolina, heading toward Charlotte, North Carolina. On the coast it destroyed many houses, piled boats on top of each other, and left Sullivan's Island and the Isle of Palms disconnected. By the time it reached Charlotte, it was still strong enough to topple many trees across roads and houses and leave many without power for as long as a week.

Hurricane Hugo was first detected, as a thunderstorm, near Cape Verde, Africa, on September 9. Moving westward, it was declared a tropical storm on September 11, and declared a hurricane on the 13th.

Hurricane Hugo caused much devastation in places such as Guadeloupe, the Leeward Islands, St. Croix, and Puerto Rico, where six people died on September 18th.

Victor Hugo

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Victor Hugo

Victor Hugo (February 26, 1802 - May 22, 1885) was the most important of the Romantic authors in the French language.

Born in Besançon, Doubs in the region of Franche-Comté. One of the most powerful and popular authors of 19th century France, and a champion of republicanism exiled during the reign of Napoleon III and returned in 1870.

Major works include novels and a large body of poetry. His death, and the spontaneous national mourning which followed, inspired the French government to reinvent The Panthéon in Paris as a temple in homage to the great men (and, eventually, women) of France. He is buried in its necropolis.

Although Hugo is better known to the English-speaking world as a novelist, it was as a poet that he broke new ground. The French poetic traditions were as well-established in his time as the English ones were before the time of the Romantic poets, and Hugo's contribution may be compared with that of Wordsworth. He believed that the poet's purpose should be two-fold:

In his epic, La Légende des Siècles, he attempts, by reference to historical events, to depict humanity's struggle to emerge from obscurity into enlightenment.

Honorary President and founder of the Association Littéraire et Artistique Internationale (ALAI) in 1878 in Paris which gave itself the objective of creating an international convention for the protection of literary and artistic properties which was achieved eight years later with the Berne Convention on September 9, 1886.
