Hephzibah is a city located in Richmond County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,880. In 1996 the governments of the City of Augusta, Georgia and Richmond County combined to form a single governing body and the town of Hephzibah became part of Augusta.

Geography

Hephzibah is located at 33°18'15" North, 82°5'53" West (33.304126, -82.097923)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 50.3 km² (19.4 mi²). 50.1 km² (19.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.31% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 3,880 people, 1,374 households, and 1,090 families residing in the city. The population density is 77.4/km² (200.4/mi²). There are 1,570 housing units at an average density of 31.3/km² (81.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 71.37% White, 25.08% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 0.75% from other races, and 1.68% from two or more races. 1.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,374 households out of which 39.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.4% are married couples living together, 17.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.6% are non-families. 17.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.81 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 9.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $37,123, and the median income for a family is $42,898. Males have a median income of $32,917 versus $22,841 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,905. 16.3% of the population and 12.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.5% are under the age of 18 and 16.8% are 65 or older.
