Literature | Hector Eldest son of Priam, the noblest and most magnanimous of all the chieftains in Homer's Iliad (a Greek epic). After holding out for ten years, he was slain by Achilles, who lashed him to his chariot, and dragged the dead body in triumph thrice round the walls of Troy. The Iliad concludes with the funeral obsequies of Hector and Patroclos. The Hector of Germany. Joachim II., Elector of Brandenburg (1514-1571). You wear Hector's cloak. You are paid off for trying to deceive another. You are paid in your own coin. When Thomas Percy, Earl of Northumberland, in 1569, was routed, he hid himself in the House of Hector Armstrong, of Harlaw. This villain betrayed him for the reward offered, but never after did anything go well with him; he went down, down, down, till at last he died a beggar in rags on the roadside. Hector (A). A leader; so called from the son of Priam and generalissimo of the Trojans. Hector (To). To swagger, or play the bully. It is hard to conceive how the brave, modest, noble-minded patriot came to be made the synonym of a braggart and blusterer like Ajax. Source: Brewer's Dictionary. |
Slang in 1811 | HECTOR. bully, a swaggering coward. To hector; to bully, probably from such persons affecting the valour of Hector, the Trojan hero. Source: 1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue. |

In Greek mythology, Hector was a Trojan prince and the second greatest fighter in the Trojan War after Achilles.
He was the eldest son of Priam and Hecuba, called "breaker of horses" though he never seems to do so. With his wife, Andromache, he fathered Astyanax. He had a horse named Lampos and friends named Misenus and Poludamas. His charioteer was Cebriones, his half-brother.
Hector provides a stark contrast for Achilles, who was from first to last a man of war. Hector was fighting, not for personal glory, but in defense of his homeland. His words, "Fight for your country - that is the first and only omen" became a proverb to patriotic Greeks. Through him we can see glimpses of what life might have been like in more peaceful times. The scene where he bid a final fairwell to his wife Andromache and his infant son is one of the more moving scenes in the Iliad.
During the Trojan War, Hector killed Protesilaus and was wounded by Ajax.
Nonetheless, Hector's fate is never in doubt. Achilles, raging over the death of Patroclus, kills him and drags his body thrice round the city of Troy in spite of Priam's pleas to allow him to be buried. The final passage in the Iliad is his funeral, after which the doom of Troy is just a matter of time. In the final sacking, his father and brothers are killed, his son is hurled from the walls in fear that he would avenge Hector, and his wife carried off by Neoptolemus.

Hector Camacho Jr (born 1978) is a professional boxer. He is the son of legendary three time world champion Hector Macho Camacho. At the age of eight, Camacho Jr. first gained some prominence, when he entered the ring with his dad and did a mock sparring with him before his father's world title defense against Edwin Rosario. That night, he wore a Puerto Rican flag attire.
After an award winning amateur boxing career, he turned professional in the middle 1990s. As a professional, he has beaten boxers like Rocky Martinez and former world champion Philip Holiday, and he had a no contest against former world champion Jesse James Leija, the Leija fight being filled with controversy because of the scoring of the fight, as the judges had initially given the fight to Camacho Jr on a technical decision in five rounds, but Leija's camp protested the result, resulting in the fight being called a no-contest.
In 2002, Camacho Jr. lost for the first time, to Argentine Omar Weiss, by a decision in ten rounds.
Camacho recovered with a 12 round win by decision against an unknown Mexican boxer in California.
A constant HBO Boxing star, he sports a record of 36 wins, 1 loss and 1 no contest, with 18 wins by knockout.
