Gratis is a term in Latin and various derivative languages (e.g. English, Spanish, French, Danish, German) meaning free, in the sense that you don't have to pay a thing for getting something (free of charge).

In hacker jargon, another common term for gratis is free as in beer, to contrast with libre or free as in speech. (See also free software)

Gratis is a village located in Preble County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 934.

Geography


Gratis is located at 39°38'58" North, 84°31'39" West (39.649326, -84.527551)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²). 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 934 people, 349 households, and 255 families residing in the village. The population density is 383.6/km² (989.2/mi²). There are 361 housing units at an average density of 148.3/km² (382.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 99.25% White, 0.11% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.11% from two or more races. 0.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 349 households out of which 39.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.7% are married couples living together, 8.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.9% are non-families. 23.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.11. In the village the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 34.7% from 25 to 44, 18.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 108.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.4 males. The median income for a household in the village is $36,522, and the median income for a family is $40,938. Males have a median income of $31,477 versus $21,583 for females. The per capita income for the village is $16,304. 11.0% of the population and 7.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.5% are under the age of 18 and 5.4% are 65 or older.
