Bible | Grasshopper belongs to the class of neuropterous insects called Gryllidae. This insect is not unknown in Palestine. In Judg. 6:5; 7:12; Job 39:30; Jer. 46:23, where the Authorized Version has "grasshopper," the Revised Version more correctly renders the Hebrew word ('arbeh) by "locust." This is the case also in Amos 7:1; Nah. 3:17, where the Hebrew word _gob_ is used; and in Lev. 11:22; Num. 13:33; Eccl. 12:5; Isa. 40:22, where _hagab_ is used. In all these instances the proper rendering is probably "locust" (q.v.). Source: Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary. |
Dream Interpretation | To dream of seeing grasshoppers on green vegetables, denotes that enemies threaten your best interests. If on withered grasses, ill health. Disappointing business will be experienced. If you see grasshoppers between you and the sun, it denotes that you will have a vexatious problem in your immediate business life to settle, but using caution it will adjust itself in your favor. To call peoples' attention to the grasshoppers, shows that you are not discreet in dispatching your private business. Source: Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted .... |
Literature | Grasshopper as the sign of a grocer, is the crest of Sir Thomas Gresham, the merchant grocer. The Royal Gresham Exchange used to be profusely decorated with grasshoppers, and the brass one on the eastern part of the present edifice is the one which escaped the fires of 1666 and 1838. There is a tale that Sir Thomas was a foundling, and that a woman, attracted by the chirping of a grasshopper, discovered the outcast and brought him up. Except as a tale, this solution of the combination is worthless. Gres = grass (Anglo-Saxon, græs), and no doubt grasshopper is an heraldic rebus on the name. Puns and rebuses were at one time common enough in heraldry, and often very far-fetched. Grasshopper (The). A compound of seven animals. (Anglo-Saxon, græshoppa.) "It has the head of a horse, the neck of an ox, the wings of a dragon, the feet of a camel, the tail of a serpent, the horns of a stag, and the body of a scorpion." - Caylus: Oriental Tales (The Four Talismans). Larger version
A Grasshopper is a type of insect similar to a locust but less damaging because it is usually found in much smaller numbers and it doesn't swarm.
Grasshoppers have very powerful back legs and they can jump long distances and they have an open circulatory system in which blood bathes the tissues directly.
