DomainDefinitions

Health

The specifications for how information, stored in nucleic acid sequence (base sequence), is translated into protein sequence (amino acid sequence). The start, stop, and order of amino acids of a protein is specified by consecutive triplets of nucleotides called codons (codon). (references)

Medicine

The system of correspondence between the nucleotide sequence of an mRNA molecule and the amino acid sequence of the protein it gives rise to. A similar correspondance exists between the mRNA sequence and the DNA sequence of a gene. Each of the 20 amino acids is specified by a different arrangement of three adjacent nucleotides(triplet code). Source: European Union. (references)

Pictured in this laboratory setting are scientists looking at a lighted slide of proteins and analyzing it. They are wearing lab coats and studying it intently. Knowing how the genetic code relates to the proteins made by the body is an important tool for scientists in their new technology, as they continue to explore the nature of the cancer cell.Credit: Linda Bartlett (photographer).

Health

Knowing the genetic code for proteins allows scientists to detect similarities among proteins. (references)

The DNA contained the genetic code for one component, called a "G" protein, of a signaling system which is present in many cells, and which is known to be involved in endocrine cell growth and secretion. (references)

The fact that the repetition in the genetic code tends to get longer with each generation explains the phenomenon of "anticipation" in which the disease shows itself earlier and more severely in each generation. (references)
