Garland County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 88,068. The county seat is Hot Springs.

Garland County was formed on 5 April 1873 and was named for Augustus Hill Garland, 11th governor of Arkansas.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,903 km² (735 mi²). 1,754 km² (677 mi²) of it is land and 149 km² (57 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.81% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 88,068 people, 37,813 households, and 25,259 families residing in the county. The population density is 50/km² (130/mi²). There are 44,953 housing units at an average density of 26/km² (66/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 88.85% White, 7.80% Black or African American, 0.61% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.72% from other races, and 1.49% from two or more races. 2.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

History

Garland was settled in 1802 and incorporated in 1811. It was named for the settler Joseph Garland.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 98.5 km² (38.0 mi²). 97.8 km² (37.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.71% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 990 people, 379 households, and 270 families residing in the town. The population density is 10.1/km² (26.2/mi²).
