"GAMMA RAYS" is a plural of: gamma ray. |
| Domain | Definition |
Health | Very powerful and penetrating, high-energy electromagnetic radiation of shorter wavelength than that of x-rays. They are emitted by a decaying nucleus, usually between 0.01 and 10 MeV. They are also called nuclear x-rays. (references) |
Mining | High-energy, short-wavelength, electromagnetic radiation emitted by a nucleus. Energies of gamma rays are usually between 0.010 and 10 million eV. X-rays also occur in this energy range but are of nonnuclear origin. Gamma radiation usually accompanies alpha and beta emissions and always accompanies fission. Gamma rays are very penetrating and are best attenuated by dense materials like lead and depleted uranium. (references) |
Nuclear Energy & Physics | Electromagnetic radiation emitted in the process of nuclear transition or particle annihilation. Source: European Union. (references) |
Solar | High energy radiation (energies in excess of 100 keV) observed during large, extremely energetic solar FLARES. (references) |
Space | High energy, very short wavelength electromagnetic radiation which can be generated by nuclear reactions (ie., fission and fusion). (references) |
| Electromagnetic waves of the highest frequencies known, originally discovered as an emission of radioactive substances. (references) | |
| Electromagnetic radiation in the neighborhood of 100 femtometers wavelength. (references) | |

Screenplays | This is an audience that's raised on television, their standards have been systematically lowered over the years. These guys sit in front of their sets and the gamma rays eat the white cells of their brains out! (Manhattan; writing credit: Woody Allen ; Marshall Brickman)

Health | Radioactive substances emit gamma rays all the time. When not in use, the radioactive "source" is stored down in a pool of water which absorbs the radiation harmlessly and completely. (references)
Food irradiation is the treatment of food with high energy such as gamma rays, electron beams, or x rays as a means of cold pasteurization, which destroys living bacteria, to control foodborne disease. (references)
To produce the X-rays, a beam of electrons is directed at a thin plate of gold or other metal, producing a stream of X-rays coming out the other side. Like cobalt gamma rays, X-rays can pass through thick foods, and require heavy shielding for safety. (references)
