Literature | Fleet Street (London). For 200 years after the Conquest London was watered on the west by "the river of Wells," afterwards called "Fleet dyke, because (Stowe says) it runneth past the Fleete." In the middle of the city and falling into the Thames was Wellbrooke; on the east side, Langbourne; and in the western suburbs, Oldbourne. Along the Fleete and Oldbourne "ships" used to ply with merchandise. These four, together with the Roding, the Lea, the Ravensbourne, and the Wandle, now serve as sewers to the great metropolis. (From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)
Fleet Street is a famous London street, traditionally the home of the national press. Despite the fact that all the major newspapers have now moved out of their Fleet Street offices, the street's name continues to be used as a synonym for the British press. The last major news office, Reuters left in 2003.It is in the City of London and to the west becomes the Strand, and to the east becomes Ludgate Hill. The nearest tube stations are Temple, Chancery Lane, and Blackfriars. It is very close to City Thameslink station.
The street is named after the River Fleet which flows under the road.
