Health | Scientists sponsored by NICHD have found that a protein in the body, basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), regulates nerve cell growth in the brain of newborn rats by crossing the blood-brain barrier to stimulate nerve cell division (Wagner et al., 1999). These researchers also discovered that the effects of bFGF were not restricted to the perinatal period, but also stimulated brain cell growth in older animals, indicating that cells continue to be responsive to bFGF later in life. In adult animals, peripheral bFGF increased cell division threefold in the forebrain and areas related to the sense of smell, indicating that bFGF regulates ongoing generation of nerve cells by a unique pathway, potentially providing new approaches for treating damaged brain cells during development and into adulthood.
