FARADAY ROTATION

Specialty Definition: FARADAY ROTATION

DomainDefinition

Electrical Engineering

A phenomenon of rotation about the direction of propagation of the electric flux density vector of a linearly polarised electromagnetic wave as it passes through a gyromagnetic medium subjected to any magnetostatic field having a component along the direction of propagation. Source: European Union. (references)

Physics

The orientation of the electric field vector of an electromagnetic wave propagating parallel to a magnetic field embedded in a plasma rotates as the wave propagates. This rotation is called Faraday rotation and measurements of it can be used to deduce the strength of the magnetic field. (references)
