Specialty Definitions: Electric Current

DomainDefinitions

Electrical Engineering

Movement of electricity in a medium or along a circuit; the direction of the current is accepted as opposite to that of the motion of negative electricity. Source: European Union. (references)
A flow of electricity, i. e. an ordered movement of electrically charged particles. Source: European Union. (references)

Space

A continuous flow of electrons and/or ions, through a material with conducts electricity. A currents usually flows in a closed circuit, without beginning or end. In daily life currents are generally driven through wires by voltages produced by batteries or generators. In space plasmas, some currents may be produced this way, but many are inherent to the way ions and electrons move through magnetic fields, e.g. their drifts. (references)
