Dulce is a town located in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,623.
Geography
Dulce is located at 36°56'22" North, 106°59'23" West (36.939557, -106.989600)1.According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 33.5 km² (12.9 mi²). 33.5 km² (12.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 2,623 people, 779 households, and 595 families residing in the town. The population density is 78.2/km² (202.6/mi²). There are 899 housing units at an average density of 26.8/km² (69.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 3.43% White, 0.04% African American, 90.66% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 4.35% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races. 11.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.There are 779 households out of which 48.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.8% are married couples living together, 28.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.6% are non-families. 19.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.34 and the average family size is 3.83.
In the town the population is spread out with 40.0% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 16.3% from 45 to 64, and 4.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 25 years. For every 100 females there are 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.4 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $26,818, and the median income for a family is $29,402. Males have a median income of $26,055 versus $21,623 for females. The per capita income for the town is $10,108. 29.5% of the population and 24.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 34.6% are under the age of 18 and 41.4% are 65 or older.
Underground Alien Base?
Dulce is allegedely the home to an Joint US/Alien underground base, which is located at the nearby Archuleta Mesa. A lot of information is available on the internet regarding the so-called 'Dulce Base'. Whether it exists or not, is another question.
