Dryden is a town located in Tompkins County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 13,532.

Geography


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 243.9 km² (94.2 mi²). 243.1 km² (93.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.31% water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 13,532 people, 5,455 households, and 3,403 families residing in the town. The population density is 55.7/km² (144.2/mi²). There are 5,781 housing units at an average density of 23.8 persons/km² (61.6 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.71% White, 1.49% African American, 0.33% Native American, 1.48% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.58% from other races, and 1.38% from two or more races. 1.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,455 households out of which 30.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 37.6% are non-families. 27.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.98. In the town the population is spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.4 males. The median income for a household in the town is $42,559, and the median income for a family is $54,886. Males have a median income of $37,579 versus $26,722 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,415. 12.0% of the population and 7.3% of families are below the poverty line. As of the census of 2000, there are 1,832 people, 772 households, and 469 families residing in the village. The population density is 426.1/km² (1,104.9/mi²). There are 811 housing units at an average density of 188.6 persons/km² (489.1 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.18% White, 1.26% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 1.47% from two or more races. 1.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 772 households out of which 30.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 39.2% are non-families. 33.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 3.06.
