Dickinson is a town located in Broome County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,335.

Geography


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 12.6 km² (4.9 mi²). 12.4 km² (4.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.44% water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 5,335 people, 1,980 households, and 1,219 families residing in the town. The population density is 430.0/km² (1,114.8/mi²). There are 2,131 housing units at an average density of 171.8/km² (445.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.27% White, 4.20% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.82% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 1.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,980 households out of which 26.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% are married couples living together, 11.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.4% are non-families. 33.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.87. In the town the population is spread out with 19.0% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 102.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.1 males. The median income for a household in the town is $38,996, and the median income for a family is $49,583. Males have a median income of $33,654 versus $25,699 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,246. 7.2% of the population and 4.6% of families are below the poverty line. As of the census of 2000, there are 739 people, 293 households, and 217 families residing in the town. The population density is 6.4/km² (16.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.56% White, 0.41% African American, 1.22% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 0.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. Dickinson is located at 46°53'1" North, 102°47'20" West (46.883575, -102.788811)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.6 km² (9.5 mi²). 24.5 km² (9.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.21% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 16,010 people, 6,517 households, and 4,020 families residing in the city. The population density is 652.7/km² (1,690.7/mi²). There are 7,033 housing units at an average density of 286.7/km² (742.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.16% White, 0.27% African American, 1.20% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
