DEPARTURE FROM NUCLEATE BOILING

Specialty Definition: DEPARTURE FROM NUCLEATE BOILING

DomainDefinition

Energy

The point at which the heat transfer from a fuel rod rapidly decreases due to the insulating effect of a steam blanket that forms on the rod surface when the temperature continues to increase. (DNB). (references)

Nuclear Energy & Physics

The change from nucleate to film boiling. The vapor film formed between the heated surface and the cooling liquid decreases the heat transfer from surface to liquid so that a maximum occurs in the curve of heat flux density versus temperature difference. Source: European Union. (references)
The heat flux at which transition film boiling starts to replace nucleate boiling. It is characterized by an abrupt change in surface heat transfer coefficient. Source: European Union. (references)
