DAVID'S EMPTY CELL TEST

Specialty Definition: DAVID'S EMPTY CELL TEST

DomainDefinition

Mathematics

A distribution-free test of the null hypothesis that a continuous population has a particular completely specified probability density function against the general alternative hypothesis that it has not. The idea behind the test is that if the area under the hypothesised density function is divided into a number of vertical strips of equal area, the bases of which are considered as cells, then a simple random sample from the actual population would tend to be more evenly dispersed among the cells if the hypothesis were true than if it were false. The number of empty cells should thus provide a reasonable index of the truth or falsity of the hypothesis. Source: European Union. (references)
