Committee established by the governors of the central banks of the Group of Ten countries at the end of 1974 as a result of serious disturbances in the international currency and banking markets, it consists of representatives of the central banks of Belgium, Canada, France, West Germany, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. It provides a forum for cooperation between member countries on banking supervision matters. The Secretariat is provided by the Bank for International Settlements. It is often known as the Cooke Committee, after Mr W. P. Cooke, Associate Director of the Bank of England, who was chairman from 1977-1988. Source: European Union. (references)
