Committee established by the governors of the central banks of the Group of Ten countries at the end of 1974 as a result of serious disturbances in the international currency and banking markets, it consists of representatives of the central banks of Belgium, Canada, France, West Germany, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. It provides a forum for cooperation between member countries on banking supervision matters. The Secretariat is provided by the Bank for International Settlements. It is often known as the Cooke Committee, after Mr W. P. Cooke, Associate Director of the Bank of England, who was chairman from 1977-1988. Source: European Union. (references)

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka adopted capital adequacy standards set by the Basel Committee on banking regulations and supervisory practices in 1993. The Central Bank has raised the minimum capital adequacy standards, to 4.5 percent for core and 9 percent for total capital effective January 1, 2001 and 5 percent for core and 10 percent fo total capital from the year 2002. The state owned People's bank capital adequacy ratio (CAR) was well below the minimum in 2000, whereas Bank of Ceylon's was at 10 percent. (references)
