Bartow County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 76,019. The county seat is Cartersville6.This county is part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area.
It was created from the Cherokee lands of the Cherokee County territory in 1832 on December 3rd, and called Cass County until renamed in 1861 on December 6th. The original county seat was at Cassville.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,218 km² (470 mi²). 1,190 km² (459 mi²) of it is land and 28 km² (11 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.27% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 76,019 people, 27,176 households, and 21,034 families residing in the county. The population density is 64/km² (166/mi²). There are 28,751 housing units at an average density of 24/km² (63/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.79% White, 8.68% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.62% from other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. 3.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.There are 27,176 households out of which 38.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.90% are married couples living together, 11.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.60% are non-families. 18.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.14.
In the county the population is spread out with 27.90% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 33.00% from 25 to 44, 21.40% from 45 to 64, and 9.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 97.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.90 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $43,660, and the median income for a family is $49,198. Males have a median income of $35,136 versus $24,906 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,989. 8.60% of the population and 6.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.60% are under the age of 18 and 12.20% are 65 or older.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,684 people, 6,120 households, and 4,094 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (26/mi²). There are 6,590 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.84% White, 0.21% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 0.34% from two or more races. 0.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,120 households out of which 29.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.60% are married couples living together, 7.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.10% are non-families. 29.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.87. In the county the population is spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 24.80% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 20.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 94.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $32,922, and the median income for a family is $40,564. Males have a median income of $29,736 versus $20,108 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,067. 11.10% of the population and 7.20% of families are below the poverty line.
