CARTESIAN COORDINATES

"CARTESIAN COORDINATES" is a plural of: cartesian coordinate.

Specialty Definition: CARTESIAN COORDINATES

DomainDefinition

Computing

Cartesian coordinates (After Renee Descartes, French philosopher and mathematician) A pair of numbers, (x, y), defining the position of a point in a two-dimensional space by its perpendicular projection onto two axes which are at right angles to each other. x and y are also known as the abscissa and ordinate. The idea can be generalised to any number of independent axes. Compare polar coordinates. (1997-07-08). Source: The Free On-line Dictionary of Computing.

Military

A coordinate system in which locations of points in space are expressed by reference to three mutually perpendicular planes, called coordinate planes. The three planes intersect in three straight lines called coordinate axes. See also coordinates. (references)

Space

A system of uniquely marking the position of a point on a plane [or in 3-dimensional space] by 2 [3] numbers (its "cartesian coordinates") giving its distances from 2 [3] mutually perpendicular lines ("cartesian axes"). The distances and the axes to which they are parallel are usually marked (x,y) in a plane and (x,y,z) in space; the "origin" is the point at which the axes intersect. (references)
