Botanical | One of the finest timbers in Darien, this tree is highly regarded medicinally. The gum accumulating in the heartwood is used for massages and hair oil. It is supposed to be good for the skin, and it is used, like carano, for extracting maggots. Yaviza Negroes mix it with honey and put in the mouths of newly born to impart knowledge and ward of hexes. The gum is also used for treating veneral diseases. (references) |
