Aerospace

(Abbreviation Btu) The amount of heat required to raise 1 pound of water at 60 degrees F, 1 F.This unit is defined for various temperatures, but the general usage seems to be to take the Btu as equal to 252 15 gram-calories or 1055 joules. (references)

Energy

The standard measure of heat energy. It takesone Btu to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit atsea level. For example, it takes about 2,000 Btus to make a pot of coffee. One Btu isequivalent to 252 calories, 778 foot-pounds, 1055 joules, and 0.293 watt-hours. Note:In the abbreviation, only the B is capitalized. (Btu). (references)

Meteorology & Standards

In the International System, heat is measured in joules; it is the quantity of heat "equivalent" to an energy of one joule. But in the British System, the British Thermal Unit is the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of one 1b of water through the Fahrenheit degree:1 BTU = 1055 J = 0, 252 kcal. The term which equals 100, 000 BTU is consequently different from the french "thermie";1 therm(GB)= 25, 2 thermies(France). Source: European Union. (references)

Specialty Definition: British thermal unit

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

The British thermal unit (Btu) is a nonmetric unit of heat, used in the United States and, to a certain extent, the UK. The SI unit is the joule (J), which is used by most other countries. 1 Btu is defined by the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound avoirdupois of water from 63oF to 64oF. It is often used to describe the heat value of fuels and heating and cooling system capacities.

1 Btu is approximately:

252.0 calories,
778 ft·lb,
1,055 joules

A unit called the quad is defined as 1015 BTUs, which is about 1.055 × 1018 joules.

The Btu should not be confused with the Board of Trade Unit (B.O.T.U.), which is a much larger quantity of energy.
