Specialty Definition: Brahmanism

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Brahmanism was an Indian religion founded on the caste system, with the brahmins as a hereditary clergy, and recognizing the Vedas as "relevated" canon. When Islam came to India, the confrontation between Brahmanism and Islam gave birth to Hinduism, in the stricter meaning of this word. (Some, however, use it as including Brahmanism.)
