Health | Infections with protozoa of the genus Blastocystis. The species B. hominis is responsible for most infections. Surveys have generally found small numbers of this species in human stools submitted for parasitologic studies, with higher positivity rates and organism numbers being reported in AIDS patients and patients with other immunosuppressive diseases. Symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, and fatigue. (references) |
