Specialty Definition: Biopsy

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

A biopsy is a medical test involving the removal of cells or tissuess for examination under a microscope.

When only a sample of tissue is removed, the procedure is called an incisional biopsy or core biopsy. When an entire lump or suspicious area is removed, the procedure is called an excisional biopsy. When a sample of tissue or fluid is removed with a needle, the procedure is called a needle biopsy or fine-needle aspiration.

Patient is being prepared for surgery. An operating room is pictured with physician looking on while patient is being administered anesthetic. Several surgical attendants are also visible. Surgical biopsy is called for to determine exact nature of solid tumor.Credit: Linda Bartlett (photographer).

Pictured is a physician using a remotely controlled endoscope. He is looking through a microscope-like eyepiece to monitor his actions while using small brushes and knives to take a biopsy.Credit: Linda Bartlett (photographer).

The patient is a 53 year old woman with metastatic melanoma to multiple subcutaneous sites and retroperitoneum. She was treated with tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) transduced with the gene for tumor necrosis factor (TNF). Pretreatment biopsy shows multiple live melanoma cells with little lymphoid infiltrate. Following treatment with TNF gene modified TILs plus interleukin-2, a biopsy of another lesion showed massive coagulative necrosis of the tumor with no viable tumor seen. This is a typical picture seen in experimental animals treated with tumor necrosis factor. This patient has had a substantial objective response that is currently ongoing at nine months following initiation of treatment.Credit: Unknown photographer/artist.
