Beatrice is a town located in Monroe County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 412.

Geography


Beatrice is located at 31°43'59" North, 87°12'24" West (31.733178, -87.206773)1. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.5 km² (1.4 mi²). 3.5 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics


As of the census2 of 2000, there are 412 people, 158 households, and 106 families residing in the town. The population density is 117.8/km² (304.8/mi²). There are 203 housing units at an average density of 58.1/km² (150.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 26.94% White, 72.57% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.24% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 158 households out of which 32.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.1% are married couples living together, 25.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% are non-families. 29.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.17. In the town the population is spread out with 28.9% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 20.6% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 19.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 89.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.3 males. The median income for a household in the town is $15,833, and the median income for a family is $15,625. Males have a median income of $30,417 versus $15,469 for females. The per capita income for the town is $8,661. 44.4% of the population and 39.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 54.5% are under the age of 18 and 29.2% are 65 or older.

As of the census of 2000, there are 12,496 people, 5,395 households, and 3,301 families residing in the city. The population density is 643.3/km² (1,666.7/mi²). There are 5,818 housing units at an average density of 299.5/km² (776.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.50% White, 0.34% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. 0.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,395 households out of which 28.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.8% are married couples living together, 8.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.8% are non-families. 33.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.87. In the city the population is spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 21.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 89.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $33,735, and the median income for a family is $42,472. Males have a median income of $29,976 versus $21,303 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,816. 9.5% of the population and 7.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 10.0% are under the age of 18 and 8.9% are 65 or older.
