Federal Student Aid | An Expected Family Contribution (EFC) status where, because of low income, a student automatically has a zero EFC (automatic zero EFC). A dependent student qualifies if the student and parent(s) were not required to file an IRS Form 1040 and the parents' combined adjusted gross incomes or earned incomes is $13,000 or less. An independent student with dependents other than a spouse qualifies if neither the student and spouse (if applicable), was required to file an IRS Form 1040 and the student's and spouse's (if applicable), adjusted gross income(s) or earned income(s) is $13,000 or less.
