D. (usually preceded by the or el) -- The abbreviation for the Spanish honorific Don, a mark of high esteem for a distinguished Christian gentleman. It is roughly comparable to the style "Honourable" in British custom, although the analogy is a loose one, at best. The female version is Doña.Don or Doña is attached to the Christian name, and the person is then addressed as such. For example, if Señor Diego de la Vega is to be addressed as a Don, then the correct form of address would not be "Señor de la Vega", but "Don Diego".

There are several rivers named Don:
The word Don also stands for:
- Don River, Russia, one of the main rivers of Russia.
- River Don, Scotland, a river in Scotland which rises in the Grampians and flows 131 km (82 miles) eastwards to the North Sea at Aberdeen.
- River Don, England, a river in South Yorkshire which rises in the Pennines and flows 112 km (70 miles) eastwards to join the River Ouse shortly before it, in turn, joins the Humber.

- Danu, the mother goddess in Insular Brythonic mythology.
- an abbreviated form of the male Christian name Donald.
- in English universities, a head, fellow or tutor of a college.
- in Spanish, a title prefixed to a man's Christian name, e.g. Don Juan, Don Quijote, or in the operas Don Carlos, Don Giovanni, Don Pasquale. Hence it is also a (rather old-fashioned) slang name for a Spaniard. The word appears in Henry Newbolt's poem Drake's Drum: "If the dons sight Devon, I'll quit the port of heaven...".
- a mafia or underworld don - the head of an organised crime gang.

This article is about the river in Western Russia. Other links that have the same, but probably have different meanings can be found hereThe Don is one of the major rivers of Russia. It rises near Tula, southeast of Moscow, and flows for a distance of about 1,950 km (1,220 miles) to the Sea of Azov.
From its source, the river first flows southeast to Voronezh, then southwest to its mouth. The main city on the river is Rostov, its main tributary the Donets.
At its easternmost point, the Don comes near the Volga, and the Don-Volga Canal (length ca. 105 km (65 miles)), connecting both rivers, is a major waterway.
The Don was known in the times of the old Scythians as the Tanaïs, and has been a major trading route ever since.

The River Don is a river in South Yorkshire, England. It rises in the Pennines and flows for 112km (70m) eastwards, through the Don Valley, via Penistone, Sheffield, Rotherham, Mexborough, Conisbrough, Doncaster and Stainforth. It joins the River Ouse at Goole in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The Don's major tributaries are the Dearne, the Rother and the Sheaf.
Along the Sheffield - Rotherham stretch of the river are five weirs that punctuate a local footpath: the Five Weirs Walk.
Some of the twistier sections of the Don are abridged by a series of canal cuttings that constitute the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation.
The industrial nature of the region has led to a severe pollution problem for the river, although this has abated somewhat over recent years, with salmon reported in the river near Doncaster.
Fig trees grow on a stretch of the river bank in Sheffield; the seeds having germinated successfully thanks to the increased warmth of the water near factory outfalls.
The Don derives its name from Danu, a Celtic mother goddess.
