Tchula is a town located in Holmes County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,332.

Geography


Tchula is located at 33°10'51" North, 90°13'21" West (33.180711, -90.222588)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.7 km² (1.4 mi²). 3.6 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.11% water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 2,332 people, 724 households, and 524 families residing in the town. The population density is 647.8/km² (1,683.6/mi²). There are 772 housing units at an average density of 214.4/km² (557.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 3.43% White, 95.93% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. 0.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 724 households out of which 38.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 21.4% are married couples living together, 45.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% are non-families. 25.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.22 and the average family size is 3.92. In the town the population is spread out with 37.9% under the age of 18, 13.0% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 14.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 24 years. For every 100 females there are 80.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 71.5 males. The median income for a household in the town is $11,571, and the median income for a family is $14,773. Males have a median income of $22,250 versus $16,310 for females. The per capita income for the town is $6,373. 54.4% of the population and 49.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 66.6% are under the age of 18 and 55.8% are 65 or older.
