Born in Yokohama, he attended Tokyo university in which he met Ernest Fenollosa. In 1890, he founded the first Japanese art academy, Tokyo bijutsu gakko. Later, he also founded Nihon Bijutsuin with Hashimoto Gaho and Yokoyama Taikan. He held the Asian section of Boston Museum in 1904.
