MUAVENET

Specialty Definition: TCG Muavenet

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Four ships of the Türk Deniz Kuvvetleri (the Turkish Navy) have been named Muavenet. The name means "support"; the later ships were named in honor of the first.

The first Muavenet was an Ottoman torpedo boat that sank the pre-dreadnought battleship HMS Goliath during the Canakkale Wars.

The second Muavenet, ex-HMS Inconstant (H-49), was a destroyer ordered by Turkey to be built in England, but delayed in delivery by World War II.

Another Muavenet (DM-357), ex-USS Gwin (DD-772), was crippled by missiles from USS Saratoga (CV-60).

The most recent Muavenet (F-250), ex-USS Capodanno (FFG-1093), was given to Turkey by the United States Navy as restitution for wrecking the previous Muavenet.
