MT. KILIMANJARO

Specialty Definition: Mount Kilimanjaro

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Kilimanjaro is a mountain in northeastern Tanzania. It includes the highest peak in Africa, the extinct volcano Kibo, 5,895 metres. It is therefore considered one of the Seven Summits. The summit was first scaled by Dr. Hans Meyer in 1889.

Two other peaks are also extinct volcanoes: Mawensi and Shira.

Annually, approximately 15000 people attempt to climb the mountain, of which 40% reach the summit. Most frequently used routes are the Marangu and Machame routes, both of which do not require climbing experience.
