A lake is a large body of water, usually fresh water, surrounded by land.

Large lakes are sometimes referred to as "inland seas" and small seas are sometimes referred to as lakes. For examples (of saline lakes): the Great Salt Lake, but the Dead Sea. The largest "lake" in the world is the Caspian Sea, and the deepest is Lake Baikal in Siberia. The term lake is also used to describe a feature such as Lake Eyre which is dry most of the time but become filled under seasonal conditions of heavy rainfall.

Finland is known as The Land of the Thousand Lakes and Minnesota is known as The Land of Ten Thousand Lakes.
There are dark basaltic plains on the Moon, similar to lunar maria but smaller, that are called "laci" (singular lacus, latin for "lake"). They were once thought by early astronomers to be literal lakes.

Lakes is a town located in Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 6,706.Geography
Lakes is located at 61°36'27" North, 149°18'15" West (61.607440, -149.304056)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 39.8 km² (15.4 mi²). 35.4 km² (13.6 mi²) of it is land and 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 11.25% water.Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,706 people, 2,217 households, and 1,775 families residing in the town. The population density is 189.7/km² (491.3/mi²). There are 2,329 housing units at an average density of 65.9/km² (170.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 89.49% White, 0.60% Black or African American, 4.58% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.55% from other races, and 4.16% from two or more races. 1.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,217 households out of which 46.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.9% are married couples living together, 7.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.9% are non-families. 14.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.00 and the average family size is 3.32. In the town the population is spread out with 33.1% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 4.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 102.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.8 males. The median income for a household in the town is $63,250, and the median income for a family is $68,893. Males have a median income of $50,378 versus $30,675 for females. The per capita income for the town is $23,485. 6.9% of the population and 3.8% of families are below the poverty line.
