The General Secretary of the Communist Party of China is the highest ranking official within the Communist Party of China and heads the Secretariat of the Communist Party of China. The General Secretary is the highest ranking member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China. Previously, the Chairman was the highest position in the CPC heirarchy, but that position was abolished on September 11, 1982.The current Secretary-General is Hu Jintao.

The General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (sometimes called First Secretary) was the leader of the Soviet Union.The General Secretary led the Politburo and often the Central Committee.
