Elsa the Lioness (1956-1961) was a female lion raised by Joy Adamson (1910-1980) in Kenya. Elsa was a mild domesticated pet that had later been tought to hunt and live in the wild. One day she brought home three cubs of her own. She died early of tick fever. Her amazing life was perpetuated in Adamson's book "Born Free" and later in a movie of the same title.

Elsa is a city located in Hidalgo County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,549.

Geography


Elsa is located at 26°17'52" North, 97°59'34" West (26.297672, -97.992770)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²). 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 5,549 people, 1,575 households, and 1,324 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,447.6/km² (3,756.8/mi²). There are 1,754 housing units at an average density of 457.6/km² (1,187.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 74.50% White, 0.34% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 21.68% from other races, and 2.97% from two or more races. 97.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,575 households out of which 44.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.7% are married couples living together, 22.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 15.9% are non-families. 14.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.52 and the average family size is 3.90. In the city the population is spread out with 34.7% under the age of 18, 11.4% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 17.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 90.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.0 males. The median income for a household in the city is $19,232, and the median income for a family is $21,831. Males have a median income of $21,957 versus $17,107 for females. The per capita income for the city is $7,550. 38.3% of the population and 33.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 51.9% are under the age of 18 and 32.2% are 65 or older.
