Dyer County is a county located in the U.S. State of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 37,279. Its county seat is Dyersburg6.

Geography


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,364 km² (526 mi²). 1,322 km² (510 mi²) of it is land and 41 km² (16 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.04% water.

Demographics


As of the census2 of 2000, there are 37,279 people, 14,751 households, and 10,458 families residing in the county. The population density is 28/km² (73/mi²). There are 16,123 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (32/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 85.40% White, 12.86% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 1.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 14,751 households out of which 32.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.20% are married couples living together, 13.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.10% are non-families. 25.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.97. In the county, the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 13.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.80 males. The median income for a household in the county is $32,788, and the median income for a family is $39,848. Males have a median income of $31,182 versus $21,605 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,451. 15.90% of the population and 13.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.00% are under the age of 18 and 17.60% are 65 or older.
