Increasingly restrictive fiscal and monetary policies reduced annual average inflation from 37 percent in 1993 to 10.1 percent in 2000. In 1999, average CPI inflation was 7.3 percent, but an acceleration in late 1999 and early 2000 led the MPC to miss its targets in both years. (references)
